Reading is thriving as a music scene particularly gigs for acoustic music. There are so many nice venues and great artists to listen to.
In this article I will be discussing the best places to go and watch some great acoustic artists. In Aquedukt we use three different categories of acoustic events.;
- First one being an open mic event, simply go along to the venue with yourself and your instrument, plug in and play.
- The second type is an acoustic event which can range from an acoustic band or just a soloist.
- The final type of acoustic event is a songwriter this is usually a solo act playing the songs they have composed.
There is often overlap within these categories.
Being a singer songwriter myself I go along to a lot of these gigs to play and to listen, I really enjoy relaxing and listening to great music from the local Reading music scene.
Firstly every Saturday there are two brilliant gigs in Reading. The first one is at Fisherman’s Cottage by River Kennet. It is a beautiful venue and has such a lovely relaxed atmosphere. There are normally four to five acts playing and they’re all acoustic acts. The event is from 4pm to 7pm which brings me to the next acoustic event that evening.
The Lyndhurst is situated just beyond Queens Road car park. There is live acoustic music every Saturday evening, the event is run by the same promoter called Laz. These are always really successful events with a great turn out and atmosphere.
Every Sunday there is an acoustic gig held at RYND. The venue is fun, quirky and modern. They do amazing cocktails and they have happy hour on a Sunday which is even better !
At RYND there is normally a real mix of talented musicians, playing all types of genres and covers. There really is something for everyone.
The next set of gigs is hosted by Jonathan Hubbard who is also known as Hubcap Promotions. He holds a whole host of really successful gigs ranging from acoustic to full band.
Hubcap Promotions hold an acoustic event every Wednesday evening at Up The Junction bar situated in cemetery Junction. Its a small venue with a small stage which is perfect for acoustic acts. The bar itself has a really american feel to it, its a great venue to catch up with friends and listen to some live acoustic music.
Another great acoustic event is at Global Cafe called Bohemian Night, the event runs every first, third and fifth Wednesday of the month. It is an open mic event so anyone can turn up and plug in!
The Jolly Anglers is another great local pub that has an open mic night held every Monday evening. The pub is a really friendly, vibrant and welcoming place to go to, its a great venue to come along and enjoy some of readings best acoustic artists.
There are also quite a lot of acoustic events to get involved with regarding Reading University. They have an event that runs through term time at Mojo’s which holds a whole host of different acoustic singer songwriters.
The univeresity also has a group called RUSS (Reading university society of songwriters). They come to various events and play their material.
